How this calculator works

This model re-amortizes your current balance over the remaining months at a fixed rate, then adds the extra amount to each payment. It assumes extras reduce principal immediately and there are no penalties. If your contractual payment differs from the modeled payment, use the result as an approximation and request a payoff projection from your lender.

A worked example

On a $25,000 balance at 6.5% with 48 months remaining, the modeled payment is about $592.87. Adding $100 each month reduces the time and interest; the final partial payment is included in the result.

The formula, in plain sight

Each month: interest = opening balance × APR ÷ 1,200. Principal repaid = regular payment + extra payment − interest. Final payment is capped at the amount due. Savings = baseline interest − accelerated interest.

Frequently asked questions about early payoff

How can I pay off my car loan faster?

You can pay more than the scheduled amount when your budget allows, but first ask the lender how to direct extra money to principal and whether the contract has an early payoff charge. This calculator estimates monthly extra payments on a fixed-rate balance. Confirm the lender’s payoff instructions and keep enough savings for regular expenses and emergencies.

How much interest can I save by paying extra on my car loan?

Savings depend on the remaining balance, APR, months left, extra amount, and how your lender applies it. The calculator compares scheduled payments with an estimate that applies each extra payment to principal. Enter your current balance and terms, then compare projected interest. The result does not include any contract fee or servicing difference.

What happens if I pay an extra $100 a month on my car loan?

Extra principal can shorten repayment and reduce future interest. For this calculator’s illustration of a $25,000 balance at 6.5% APR with 48 months remaining, adding $100 each month pays the balance off about seven months earlier and saves roughly $565.60 in modeled interest. Your lender may credit payments differently, so confirm the instructions and payoff amount.

Is it better to make extra car payments or save money?

It depends on your loan cost, savings cushion, other debts, and need for cash. Extra payments may reduce interest, but money sent to a lender is less available for emergencies or other bills. Compare estimated interest savings with your priorities and any payoff terms. The calculator estimates loan savings, not the value of your full financial plan.

Can I pay off my car loan early without a penalty?

Check your loan agreement or ask the servicer whether an early payoff fee applies and how it calculates the payoff amount. This calculator does not include prepayment charges, accrued daily interest, or lender processing rules. Request a dated payoff quote before sending a final payment, and use that written amount to confirm the account will be paid in full.

Does making biweekly car payments save interest?

It can reduce interest if the schedule results in extra principal payments arriving sooner, but the result depends on how the lender credits each payment. Paying half the monthly amount every two weeks creates 26 half-payments, equal to 13 monthly payments in a year. Ask your servicer how it applies them and check for fees before joining a payment program.
